Installation Problems
|
I installed a non-VM version of Student Aid and when I try to launch it by clicking on the StudentAid.exe nothing
happens?
The most likely cause of this is that StudentAid cannot find your virtual machine (VM). There are a few diagnostic tests
you can do to verify or work around this. Within the staid3 directory there is start.bat file, this is a simple
one line script which tries to run the VM and adds the necessary classpath for SA3. Try running this script (if on
a unix/linux machine you'll need to chmod it to make it an executable). If this does not work, then its obvious
you either do not have a virtual machine installed (or configured properly). Go to Sun's
website for more info on how to download/install/configure a Java Runtime Environment (Aka.. VM). |

General Problems
|
Can I turn on a diagnostic mode to see what is happening in the background?
Launch the main StudentAid start program while holding down the ctrl key. A diagnostic window will come up which
should log and show you some of the background activity taking place. Some exceptions are expected and properly
caught and echoed, others may not be - if you're sure you found some unusual message which clearly indicates its
not working then e-mail tech support with your finding. Make sure to include information about which version you
installed and what configuration your machine is (Operating System Version, Virtual Machine). |

Platform Issues
|
The dream of platform independent software may seem as if its fully accomplished
by the advent of Java. However, keep in mind different platforms have different Virtual Machines, and as such they
support different versions of Java. To make StudentAid work on as many platforms as possible we try to be fully
complient with Java1 (Suns Java 1.1.7a JDK) and Java2 (We tested with the latest JDK 1.3). To reduce problems
further, when installing we do recommend the StudentAid version with the Virtual Machine built-in (this is only
about another 2 megs of download and is installed under the staid3 directory for it to use, lastly it reduces configuration
problems significantly). In most all cases we bundle a Java 1 compliant VM. However, that option is only available
for these platforms:
Win95, 98, NT, and 2000
Mac OS
Sun Solaris/Sparc
Student Aid will still work fine with other platforms, however you must
make sure you have a Virtual Machine installed and configured for Student Aid to use. You can test that in most
cases simply by typing: "java -version" in a command line/shell. If it finds the VM you will see an output
telling you the version info. Once that is done other platforms such as these (listed) should work fine.
Unix
Linux
OS/2 Warp
... Other, any
Java Enabled Platform
