About Lords of Irongate

LordsOfIrongate
Irongate is a parallel universe of fantasy worlds. Each world has massive underground dungeons of possibly thousands of levels filled with different mystical treasures and mysterious creatures. The deeper one wanders the more challenging the creatures and better the rewards.

The worlds are often linked together with magical portals that let travellers wander across. These portals can be random and one never knows how deep into another world one might end up.

Fortunately, every being in this universe has a home world, a world that they can control. Be aware, those that open their portals to visitors are Lords of that world and should never be angered!

Welcome to the Lords of Irongate, where fantasy begins by wandering the universe...

Detailed Game Description

Lords of Irongate was originally inspired by role playing dungeon adventure games such as netHack, Rogue, and Moria (Amiga). This version III attempts to build on that and expand it to create a virtually unlimited dungeon which includes a distributed multiplayer universe of user configurable pseudo-random worlds, 2d graphics, a growing database of hundreds of monsters/items/spells and platform independence. In brief, this is a true java "Graphic MUD" adventure game :)

All Lords of Irongate distributions from us (in single player mode) are freely distributable shareware - if you like it - PLEASE REGISTER to support its development. We'll also give you a personal registration code and enable your multiplayer ability as a "thank you" for registering or contributing to the development (Note: the registration code IS NOT freely distributable, or transferable).

The game was written as a pure "highly optimized" java application so any platform that has a Java2 virtual machine can run it (All Windows, Mac, Linux, Amiga, BeOs, OS2... whatever [not all platforms shown here were tested - please report any critical non-windows platform issues]. For common platforms, we optionally include a small virtual machine distribution with the install (recommended if you want to be sure to run the game right away).

Version III is an initial java release and is still in development to add new features/ monsters/ items/ spells/ structures/ images/ sounds/ realism/ fun/ etc. YOUR REGISTRATION and support will help to ensure that we are able to continue improving and enhancing this game for years to come.

Please check back for updates, and if you would like to help in its development (besides sending in a generous registration contribution) you can e-mail ideas directly to me at rick@enchantedgoods.com and/or request submission information and data formats (for creating more creative monsters, items, spells, images, sounds, music...). All submissions or game contributions must be your original work and become the property of EnchantedGoods.com once bundled in a distribution (if we chose to include it we will give you credit though).

A new type of graphic multiuser dungeon (Graphic MUD)

Multiuser dungeons have traditionally been like one of these:

1 - Non-graphic with a centralized server and distributed clients (typically telnet) - What no graphics?
2 - Graphic with multiple corporate controlled servers and lots of distributed clients/players - And high monthly fees!
3 - Java applet based, with a centralized server - Hard to ever connect with, and/or slow with few features!

Lords of Irongate, on the other hand, has a somewhat unique distributed server approach where players actually randomly direct connect to one another (each time they travel through a magic portal).

Every copy of Irongate "is" both a client and "is capable" of operating as a full game server for other players at the same time. The server only starts if explicitly configured to do so (multiplayer setting in world options panel), and only when you load a player. The level that your player is in, becomes the level that other players can travel to by entering through the magic portals. Players communicate by either (S)houting {text} to all other players on level, or by talking to only the visible players using [space]{text}.

The server continues to run if you (as a player) enter a portal and leave to another other world. However your server does shut down if you select to 'quit' (returning you to main menu).

Because all the worlds are distributed, there has to be a way for your player to determine where to teleport to - that is where OUR list server (and registration) is important. We maintain both a database of registered users who can use multi-player features, and a centralized list server.

Our list server gets a message from all the distributed worlds when their server becomes activate (and if a legit server we add them to our 'active' worlds list). Later, when the list server receives requests from any (registered) player who enters a magic portal, the list server then hands them a small random subset of available worlds (in their zone) to direct connect to.

To optimize for network bandwidth limitations, only different delta's are transfered between clients and server (they both have matching databases of common images/ items/ monsters/ effects/ etc..). Therefore, this is where the list server is critical - it ensures that clients are only given servers which are 'database' compatible with theirs. Of course, most all this is part of the magic "behind the scenes."

System Requirements

600 Mhz CPU or higher recommended
At least 100 megs of AVAILABLE memory for game
(If using Windows, 256 megs minimum total memory is prefered - but less if you shut down all non-essential apps)
Any Operating System capable of running a Java2 Virtual Machine (Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris...)
800x600 pixels screen resolution MINIMUM, Supports and looks better with higher resolutions (1024x768 and up)
At least 100 megs of Hard Drive space (assuming a 200 level world is generated, more or less for larger/smaller worlds).
SPEED IS IMPORTANT! This game was highly optimized for speed. We chose to sacrifice memory for some of these optimizations (since its cheap and real "power gamers" have lots). If you don't already have at least 256 megabytes - THEN GO BUY IT! (its only like $30 bucks nowadays).

Registering/Contributing to Lords of Irongate Development

Thank you for wanting to register and contribute to the development effort! This game is SHAREWARE and has no set contribution amount, so first you must decide how much you want to contribute. Here are my suggested contribution guidelines. Feel free to express your admiration by sending more. We won't complain! The minimum contribution for receiving a registration code however is $12.95 (this will let you use the multiplayer features on the current and all future releases of Irongate for at least a year).

Who you are Suggestion
Student$ 12.95
Professional$ 25.95
Divorce Attorney$ 49.95
Successful Investor$ 100
Corporate CEO$ 500
President of a small country$ 1,000
USA President$ 10,000
Bill Gates$ 1,000,000 * Bill, if you pay up, only users of Windows will get to play the game! This could be the masterstroke that ensures your total domination of on-line gaming! And for a mere $1,000,000 how can you go wrong?
Larry Ellison$ 5,000,000 * Larry, you always want to outdo Bill, and here's yet another chance. You're never going to have a better or cheaper opportunity to put the screws to him! And of course, if you do fork over the bucks, I'll change the game so users of Windows can't use it properly without Oracle installed. (Note: if Bill's already paid up, it'll cost you $6,000,000 as I'll have to give him his $1,000,000 back. So don't delay, pay today!)

Once you've decided how much to contribute, the next decision to make is how you want to pay. Your payment options are as follows:

- Payment Option #1 -
